Yamal makes Barcelona’s interest public

Lamine Yamal’s public pitch for Julián Álvarez puts Barcelona’s pursuit of the Atlético Madrid striker in sharper focus. The teenager says he’d welcome Álvarez to Camp Nou, even as Atlético have made clear they don’t want to sell to their rivals. His comments give the transfer story a visible show of support from inside Barcelona’s squad, though they don’t indicate that negotiations have advanced.

Speaking to Spanish radio programme El Larguero, Yamal described Barcelona as “the best club in the world,” with the best fans and city, in his view. “If I were him, I’d do it,” he said, adding that the club would welcome Álvarez “with open arms” and that “we’ll be waiting for him.” It was an enthusiastic endorsement, framed as personal advice rather than a claim to know what Álvarez will decide.

Yamal said he wasn’t thinking much about the transfer, but called Álvarez a great player and made his preference plain. The comments add a prominent Barcelona voice to a pursuit that has already drawn public support from midfielder Pedri. Taken together, the players’ remarks show how the club’s interest is being discussed openly, even while the decision remains with the clubs and the striker.

Atlético’s refusal sets up a difficult negotiation

Álvarez, 26, has signalled that he wants to leave Atlético this summer in an interview during the World Cup. That position has angered the Madrid club, which has said it won’t sell him to Barcelona at any price and accused the Catalan side of making an improper approach. That public stance makes the dispute about more than the striker’s preference: Atlético are also asserting control over whether, and where, he can leave.

Barcelona have already had an offer of around €100 million rejected and are expected to return with another approach. Atlético’s position leaves the transfer dependent on whether the clubs can find terms, while reports point to serious tension between Álvarez and manager Diego Simeone. The striker, meanwhile, has no desire to join Arsenal, despite interest from the Premier League champions.

Here’s the thing: a player’s wish to leave can sharpen a club’s negotiating problem, but it doesn’t settle the price or persuade a rival to accept a sale. Barcelona’s rejected offer establishes that the two sides are far apart at this stage. Any renewed approach will have to address Atlético’s refusal as well as the reported strain between Álvarez and Simeone. For now, the public statements describe competing positions, not a deal close to completion.

Barcelona’s players make their case

Pedri also spoke in favour of the move last month, saying he wants Barcelona to sign the best players. He added that “many things need to happen” before a deal could be completed and said he didn’t want to interfere in the club’s or the player’s affairs. If the transfer happens, he said, Álvarez would be welcome. That qualification matters: his support signals a preference within the squad, while acknowledging that a transfer involves decisions beyond the players’ control.

That support from the dressing room gives Barcelona’s interest a public face, but it doesn’t change the obstacle: Atlético’s refusal to sell to a direct rival. Yamal’s appeal is a clear show of intent from one of Barcelona’s most prominent players; the next meaningful signal will be whether the clubs can reopen negotiations. This is more significant than it looks as a measure of Barcelona’s public courtship, but it remains a limited one. Words from teammates can make a destination feel appealing to a player; they can’t make Atlético accept an offer.

What happens next depends on the clubs

And yet, the gap between public interest and an actual transfer is the central point here. Yamal has made Barcelona’s welcome explicit, Pedri has voiced similar support, and Álvarez has indicated he wants to leave Atlético. Those signals point in the same direction, but Atlético’s stated refusal puts the next step in the hands of the negotiating parties. If you’re working in this space, the detail to watch is whether Barcelona’s expected renewed approach produces any change in the clubs’ positions.

The numbers here are underwhelming as a guide to what comes next: the rejected offer tells us Barcelona have made a substantial bid, but nothing in the account suggests Atlético have softened their stance. (And this is the part most people overlook.) A player’s preferred destination can shape the conversation without determining its outcome. The transfer remains unresolved. For Álvarez, Barcelona may be the destination he wants; for Atlético, the question is whether any terms are acceptable at all.
